Figure Sculpture in Water based Clay

Working from the life model and using a step by step classical approach students will learn how to sculpt the figure in water based clay. The full process of sculpting in water based clay will be covered. Starting from creating a suitable armature structure, to sculpting the model and finally hollowing for drying and firing purposes. This course is suitable for all levels and will accommodate beginners as well as experienced sculptors. While the course will focus on a more realistic rendering of the human form, those wanting to explore a more exaggerated, stylized or abstract approach to figure sculpting are also welcome to do so. Great emphasis will be put on proportions, planar structure, anatomy, sculptural design esthetic and finishing. All the basic tools and techniques of sculpting in clay will be covered. Many demonstrations by the instructor will be done. This small class structure will offer a lot of one on one attention to students.

Portrait Sculpture in Water based Clay

Working from the life model and using a step by step classical approach students will learn how to sculpt a realistic portrait in water based clay. The full process of sculpting in water based clay will be covered. Starting from creating a suitable armature structure, to sculpting the model and finally hollowing for drying and firing purposes. This course is suitable for all levels and will accommodate beginners as well as experienced sculptors. While all are welcome to work on a full head study, beginners will have the option to focus initially on parts of the face by sculpting facial features individually, such as nose, mouth, ear, and eye. Great emphasis will be put on proportions, planar structure, anatomy, sculptural esthetic and finishing. All the basic tools and techniques of sculpting in clay will be covered. Many demonstrations by the instructor will be done. This small class structure will offer a lot of one on one attention to students.

Figure Sculpture

Employing the classical approach, students will develop their sculptural and observational skills. Students will learn about armature building, materials and tools for sculpting. This course will follow a step by step approach to figure sculpting and will allow students to develop their skills while studying a specific body part at a time and the entire body.  Students will work from direct observation using classical plaster casts of anatomical figures, the human skeleton, and then move to the life model. Each body part study will be broken down into simple stages of Mass conception and/or Ecorche (anatomy) with an emphasis on proportion, planar structure, bony landmarks, muscle groups and points of origin and insertion.

Digital Sculpting in ZBrush

Zbrush is the leading digital sculpting software in the industry. Zbrush feels very much like traditional sculpting and allows for limitless creativity. This course is geared towards beginner and intermediate students who wish to gain a solid foundation in digital sculpting. Beginners will be introduced to ZBrush and learn how to sculpt simple organic objects. They will then move on to working on a more elaborate personal project involving figure studies, characters creation, clothing and organic environments. Intermediate student will be able to take it further by learning how to paint on 3D models inside ZBrush and sculpt hard surface/mechanical objects such as props, weapons, armors, robots & vehicles. Students will able to make a presentation sheet and turntable animation movie of their final work.

Mold Making and Casting

This course is dedicated to the casting of clay sculpture into a permanent material such as plaster, resin and even cold cast metals. The course will guide students through the entire process of turning a clay sculpture into a solid lasting sculpture. Student will start from a previously completed clay sculpture and will go through the process of creating the appropriate mold type for it, for instance, waste mold or silicon mold. Once the mold is completed a cast in the chosen material will be done. Finally depending on the look desired a patina finish will be applied. Various techniques of finishing and patinas will be explored.

Figure Sculpture: Portrait & Facial Expressions

This course is towards those wanting to gain a stronger understanding of the human head, portraiture, facial expressions and facial animation. Working from the life model, this Figure Sculpture course will be focusing on Portrait and Facial Expressions. For the duration of the term, each student will be sculpting in clay the five most important facial expressions from which any other expression can be recreated: Neutral, Happy, Sad, Angry & Surprised. In order to fully understand the mechanism behind facial expressions, an in-depth anatomical study of the skull bone structure and facial muscles will be covered. By the end of this course students will be able to create new convincing facial expressions using their five facial studies as reference. Next to working from a life model, students will also benefit from looking at anatomical models, expression charts, photographs and facial expression models created by Instructor.

3D Artistic Anatomy

The course is an in-depth study of artistic anatomy through clay sculpting. We will be working from the life model, skeleton, anatomical models and charts. Old master drawings and sculptures will also be introduced. Students will learn how to see beyond the skin surface and start by sculpting the bone structure of the human body before getting into the muscles and fatty tissues. Each muscle group will be studied from a 3D perspective and modeled onto the skeleton looking closely at their grouping, point of origin & insertion and action. Students will end up with a 3D anatomical figure that they will be able to keep use as valuable reference. They will have gain a stronger knowledge and understanding of anatomy applicable to not only to figure sculpture but also to figure drawing and painting.
