Course Description

Working from the life model on three extended poses, students will learn how to draw and paint the Portrait or the Nude Figure accurately following the time honoured Classical approaches of the Great Masters. Individual step-by-step instructions and demonstration by Mr. Jacot will be given each class. Techniques in Charcoal and Oil will be applied.

Depending on their skill and experience, students will be working and focusing on different stages:

Drawing 1: Line Block-in

Looking at the basic proportions of the face, the head’s structure and the anatomy, emphasis will be placed upon making accurate measurement, mapping the features at their proper place and establishing a strong structural construction of the head and individual features.

A Similar approach will be taken for those working on the full figure

Drawing 2: Tonal rendering

We will observe how light and shade create form, as we go over the theory of light and shadow. Starting with a line drawing, emphasis will be put on separating the shadow shapes from the light and rendering the halftones to model and give the form three dimensionality. Charcoal (or graphite) techniques will be applied.

Painting 1: Monochrome painting (grisaille)

For those not used to working with paint or still having a bit of trouble modeling the forms, monochromatic painting is a great transition to colour. It is like doing a tonal drawing but with paint. Going over the technical handling of the medium, you will learn how to build your painting in stages and model the form.

Painting 2: Full colour painting,

Once drawing and modeling with paint is “mastered”, Colour is the final ingredient. Going over the basic theory of colour you will learn to see and mix colours at their right value, hue and intensity. To guaranty the outcome of a successful work, the painting will be build in stages, starting with a drawing, followed by an under-painting and then the final painting. For advanced students an Alla prima approach, a more direct approach to painting, can be treated.
